Dr. Gregory Broyde, DDS
Founder & General Dentist, Smile Now Implant and Aesthetics Centre
Dr. Broyde is a Calgary general dentist whose practice is built around full-arch implant dentistry. He has practised since 2011 and has focused on implants since 2017, restoring hundreds of Calgarians to fixed, functional teeth.
About Dr. Broyde
Dr. Gregory Broyde earned both a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacology and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Alberta, graduating in dentistry in 2011. He has practised dentistry ever since, and since 2017 his work has centred almost entirely on implant dentistry and full-arch reconstruction.
He founded Smile Now Implant and Aesthetics Centre as a teeth-in-a-day full-arch implant centre, with its own dental lab on site, so the teeth for a case are designed and made in the same building where the implants are placed. To date he has completed over 700 fixed and removable full arches.
He writes the clinical articles published on the SmileNow blog. He also lectures from time to time and has mentored other dentists one on one.
Why Full-Arch Implants
Asked why he built his practice around full-arch treatment, Dr. Broyde said:
There is no other procedure in dentistry that offers such an immense change to the quality of life for the patient. Very quickly, we can properly correct some common long-term problems, like esthetics and bite. I am always turned away from the patchwork nature of general dentistry, and want to correct the larger, comprehensive issues that affect people’s daily lives.
Not all cases require All-on-X. We often turn away people who actually have good teeth and discuss full mouth reconstruction with crowns and veneers instead. I do both procedures, so there is no need to sway patients one way or another. Our goal is just to really educate them.
How Dr. Broyde Works
In a full-arch case, Dr. Broyde designs the surgical plan, provides the IV sedation, and places the implants himself. He uses Neodent implants, a Straumann Group brand. The restorative team, which includes denturist Gerard Mercier, designs the teeth and takes the impressions, and the clinic’s lab makes them.
Surgery day
Most full-arch surgeries are done in a single appointment, and a second surgical stage is rarely needed. Patients go home with a temporary bridge on the day of surgery, and the final teeth are made once the implants have healed.
Pterygoid implants
He has placed about 200 pterygoid implants. They are angled into the dense pterygoid bone at the back of the upper jaw, which can avoid extensive bone grafting when the upper jaw has lost bone.
The in-house lab
A licensed dental technician runs the clinic’s lab. It handles all of the clinic’s full-arch implant work, along with crowns, bridges, and single-implant crowns. Crowns and bridges are made in both zirconia and porcelain. Because the lab is on site, some cases are finished much sooner than they would be with an outside lab.
